Abstract
Nowadays, memes have become a part of our daily lives. We often see memes, especially when we are playing on the internet. Memes not only function as a medium of entertainment, but also as a medium to convey certain messages about a phenomenon, event, and so forth. There are many topics discussed in memes, one of which is AI. This research aims to examine internet memes about AI using a multimodal analysis method. The multimodal analysis method used in this research is the method from Kress and van Leeuwen (2006). In this research, 30 internet memes about AI were analyzed with the aim of determining the themes of each meme and how they convey their themes from a multimodal perspective. The findings of this research revealed that there are six themes covered by the memes in this research, namely cynical, witty, wise suggestions, positive message of collaborating with AI, phenomenon of popular use of AI, and ironic. The most dominant theme of the memes in this study is witty because of the 30 memes analyzed, 14 of them are memes with witty themes. This shows that internet memes about AI are mostly conveyed with witty themes because they can entertain many people, but the message conveyed remains clear and can be understood by them. The findings of this research are important to many people, especially meme readers, meme makers, and the further research on internet memes about AI.
