Yet, the success rate in selecting and training leaders still leaves much to be desired (e.g. bass, 1990, pp. 851 - 878 , 857 - 878 , burke & day, 1986, porter & mckibbin, 1989). We argue that one important reason for the lackluster track record of many personnel methods is that selection and training methods have ignored the effect of the leadership situation on performance.
