Reading is still considered an important but difficult skill for students to master, especially in functional text. Comprehension in reading is indeed a difficult one because students must find the main idea of what is read. Various teaching methods have also been used to assist students in improving students' reading comprehension for the better, but in reality, what has been done has not been able to answer this. Using the KWL strategy as a reader comprehension strategy can be a new solution to increase students' effectiveness in reading comprehension of descriptive text. This study explored how effective the use of the KWL strategy is compared to the conventional reading strategy and whether the reading strategy by filling out the KWL chart is effective. This study was conducted using two groups, namely the experimental group and the control group taken from SMPN 286 Jakarta with meetings consisting of 1 pre-test, 2 treatments and closing post-test. The result obtained was that the KWL strategy effectively increased students' reading comprehension in descriptive text. |
