This study is conducted to investigate the effectiveness and perception of the use of Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) as a mean to improve and enhance the reading skills of senior high school students at Indonesia in the context of learning the English. Reading has been considered by researchers to be one of the most important aspects of learning as researchers found that by reading, students may apply what they read. However, despite the importance of reading in the context of learning English, research studies have showed that the reading skills of Indonesian senior high school students, are considered alarming, which researchers attribute the traditional teaching method used in class for reading, among other reasons, as the reason. For this reason, the researcher used CSR, where students read collaboratively in a group with other students to help, solve, and discuss the find difficult parts of a text they find during reading using the strategies of Preview, Click and Clunk, Get the Gist, and Wrap Up, with the two main objectives to investigate its effectiveness on enhancing students ‘reading skills and their perception of the said reading approach. The study is conducted in a private senior high school in Jakarta, where two 11th grade classes were used as control and experimental groups respectively, where both groups were given pre-and-post-test while the latter received CSR treatment to investigate the effectiveness and a survey following post-test in the form of questionnaire to investigate their perception after the treatment. Through analysis of the data collected of the pre-and-post-test, the data showed that while there was only slight increase in the experimental group's mean, the significance of the result is considered insignificant. Despite this, most respondent of the questionnaire expressed positive responses to statements given in the questionnaire, signifying that CSR is positively-received by students. |
