Isi artikelThe salt plays an important role in human life because it is uses for consumption of people and industry. However, national salt production still is unable to meet the demand of domestic products. This mean that demand of salt lag behind its production, although Indonesia is the archipelago country. This study aims to analyze the government policy that have been used, and its alternative to stimulate the production and demand of salt. The results showed that salt industry has a weak position of its farmers in which the infrastructure and production facilities, and all potential land used to produce salt is managed by traditional managerial. Besides, regulatory arrangements relating to the initial price and import regulations of salt, and trade issues related to the import system in which high price deviation as well as the emergency of the cartel controlling trade in salt in the local and regional areas. Thus, import of salt in handling policy is expected to improve national salt production. In addition, the establishment of buffer stocks to maintain price stability and national food supplies, especially salts, have been urged to be realized.
