In higher education, reading journal articles is considered a painful activity indicating that most undergraduate students still face challenges, such as information literacy, motivation, reading time management, reading strategies, reading skills, and language elements. Even though there are challenges in reading journal articles, undergraduate students must fulfill the validity and accuracy of their research proposal writing based on academic papers. Therefore, this study investigates the students’ perceptions of reading journal articles for research proposal writing in terms of their attitude toward reading journal articles, their impacts, and the challenges of reading journal articles toward their research proposal writing. The participants of this study were 38 research proposal writing courses undergraduate students of an English Language Education Department at the Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia. Quantitative data was collected through a questionnaire. In the data collection process, students were asked to complete a questionnaire that applied a Likert scale containing 35 close-ended statements to see their perceptions of reading journal articles. The results showed that most students positively perceived their attitudes toward reading journal articles, agreed that reading journal articles positively supports them in research proposal writing, and revealed that they still faced various challenges in reading journal articles. In a nutshell, students believed that reading journal articles is one of the essential activities that significantly increase their research proposal writing; however, at the same time, they still face challenges in reading journal articles.
