Inferential Reading comprehension skills are the skills students find challenging. They must think and find out the information of a reading text indirectly stated. Lack of vocabulary and background knowledge are two factors that often underlie their problems. This study is an attempt to help them develop their inferential reading comprehension skills by training them by adopting the guided Inquiry-based learning (IBL). They process the reading texts using their own way of understanding, but they still are guided by the teacher. The study wanted to examine whether guided IBL helped the students develop their reading inferential skills and how it might help them. The study involved 36 junior high school students. The study adopted pre-test, guided IBL treatment, and post-tests from Andrianingtyas, (2018). The analysis was conducted by using T-test. The study found that guided IBL helped them develop their reading inferential skills as demonstrated by the significant difference between the pre-test and post- tests. In addition, the guided IBL helped them select and retrieve the information from the text, use the information from the text and outside the text to answer the inferential questions, create their answers and share and evaluate their answers with their friends. This study found that the guided IBL provides strategies for students to understand and answer the inferential comprehension questions. |
