Abstract
This study aimed to find out whether the effect of watching movie clips with English subtitles may give an effective impact on helping middle-school students in incidental vocabulary learning and to determine the attitude of middle-school students in watching movie clips with English subtitles in incidental vocabulary learning. The participants of this study are 32 middle-school students (17 participants in experimental group and 16 participants in control group) of SMP Strada Santa Maria 2, Tangerang, in the eighth grade of the second semester of the academic year 2022/2023. The participants answer the 32 multiple-choice questions in pre-test; watch movie clips entitled 'Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio' with English subtitles as the media learning in treatment section; answer the 32 multiple-choice questions in post-test; and answer questionnaires including ten five-point Likert scale questions with the attitudes of the aspects on (Behavioral, Cognitive, Emotional Attitudes) and one open-ended question. The data were analyzed in numerical and statistical form to help identify the score of vocabulary test (pre-test between post-test) and questionnaires. The findings of this study shows that: (1) an increase in the number of vocabulary only in the experimental group in watching movie clips with English subtitles in incidental vocabulary learning; and (2) the attitude of middle-school students in watching movie clips with English subtitles give positive impact in incidental vocabulary learning.
