Abstract
This study aims to measure the Papuan students’ level of confidence in speaking in English and examine the factors that influence the level of confidence of Papuan students in speaking in English based on Werang, et al. (2014). The factors used in this study are factors related to the student's environment (home), school facilities, teacher learning methods, and student motivation based on Werang, et al. (2014). Participants comprised of 39 grade 11 students from SMA YPPK ASISI Sentani, Papua. For collecting the data, the questionnaire is divided into two parts, the first is to measure the level of student confidence in speaking in English adapted from Dogaruni (2014), and the second questionnaire is to examine the factors that influence students' confidence in speaking in English-adapted from Werang, et al. (2014). The results showed that the level of student self-confidence in speaking in English was moderate, and for the factors that influence the level of students' self-confidence in speaking in English, this study found that the teacher's teaching method generally supports students' confidence in speaking in English. This shows that the teacher teaching method at school can facilitate or support the respondents' self-confidence in speaking in English. It is the same as the other two categories, namely school facilities and student motivation, that support students' selfconfidence in speaking in English. However, one category is deficient in supporting students' self-confidence in speaking in English, namely the learning environment (home). This shows that parents at home cannot support respondents' confidence in speaking in English.
