This study aims to evaluate the perceptions of undergraduate students using Duolingo in learning English vocabulary and to find out the advantages and disadvantages of the Duolingo application. Participants in this study were 131 participants from JABODETABEK and outside JABODETABEK. In the data collection process, students were asked to fill out a questionnaire containing 15 questions divided into three sections; in the first section, there were five questions to determine students' perceptions of using Duolingo for vocabulary learning. In the second section, there are five questions in which the second section asks about the advantages of the Duolingo application. In the last section, there are also five questions to find out the shortcomings of the Duolingo application. Furthermore, 10 out of 131 participants, four from JABODETABEK and six from outside JABODETABEK, were interviewed to reconfirm and strengthen the questionnaire results. The study results were analyzed based on two aspects: perceptions: the participants' voice and (dis-)advantages of using Duolingo on learning English vocabulary. The study results show that most students find learning vocabulary by using Duolingo very useful because Duolingo has interesting features that can increase students' motivation to learn English vocabulary. However, some students still say that the vocabulary given is not varied. Meanwhile, the study results also show that Duolingo provides a feature where students can take an English test, such as the TOEFL which 4000 universities worldwide have recognized. |
