This research aimed to see the students’ opinions about fanfiction for learning the English language in terms of vocabulary, grammar, reading, and writing. The participants of this research were 56 college and high school students who joined a fanfiction community on Twitter. In the data collection process, the participants were asked to respond to a questionnaire containing 8 close-ended statements and 4 open-ended questions. They were also involved in a written interview consisting of 3 questions. This study used mixed methods, which resulted in percentages and mean scores for the close-ended questionnaire. Meanwhile, the open-ended part and the interview were analyzed by grouping the answers and putting them into tables. The result of this study showed that the participants have very positive opinions towards the use of fanfiction for learning the English language. It means that fanfiction could help them learn the English language, especially in improving their vocabulary, grammar, reading, and writing. The students also felt that they had become more confident in writing in English, especially in their narrative writing. This study provides suggestions for future researchers to develop further studies on fanfiction related to other aspects such as students’ motivation in learning English. There are recommendations as well for teachers and students. |
