Abstract
Introduction
Based on Riskesdas (2013) the level of physical activity of the Indonesia population was till relatively low. Low physical activity levels can affect cognitive functions such as working memory, learning motivation, and concentration. Various types of physical exercise make changes to brain neuroplasticity in differents parts and provide various effect on various forms of learning and memory. Jogging, is the one of the sports with moderate intensity, that can be done by everyone. It is thought to have an influence on improving cognitive function. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the effect of jogging on working memory function by using the digit span test.
Methods
This study is an experimental study with pre and post-test study design. The subjects were students of Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Katolik Indonesia Atma Jaya. The Ability of working memory is measured by the Digit Span Test (DST) before and after joging for 30 minutes. Respondens were asked to fill the SQR-20 questionnaire before conducting the Digit Span Test (DST) pre-test. Data were tested using the Wilcoxon test to assess the effect of jogging on working memory functions.
Results
The average of Forward and Backward DST scores in the control and study groups increased. However, this increase was more pronounced in the study group. The Wilcoxon test results showed a significant increase in the average forward score and backward digit span test in teh study group. (p = 0.027 and p = 0.033).
Conclusion
Jogging exercise improves the working memory functions in college students.
