Polanyi is an espitemologist who believes that the form of knowledge is needed a personal knowledges. Human knowledge is derived from personal activities such as observation and understanding. Using Gestalt psychology. Polanyi describes knowing as an active comprehension of known things that requires skill. Skillfull knowing is performed by subordinating a set of particulars as clues to the shapping of a skillful achievement. We may then be said to become subsidiarily aware of these particulars within our focal awareness of the coherent entity that we achieve. Such is the personal participation of the knower in all acts of understanding. But this does not make our understanding subjective, Comprehension is neither an arbitrary act nor a passive experience, but rather a responsible act claiming universal validity. Such knowing is indeed objective in the sense that it establishes contact woth a hidden reality, a contact that is defined as conditions for anticipating true implications.
