Abstract
Introduction Decline in olfactory function is an early indicator in neurogenerative diseases, namely Alzheimer and Parkinson Disease. An olfactory function assessment instrument using ten familiar scents with assistance of multiple choice answers has been developed. Unfortunately, there were several items that are inapplicable and have not been standardized. Objective To understand various scents that have not been standardized to elderly with normal cognitive function. Methodology A descriptive cross-sectional study in Kalianyar village, Jakarta, including 23 participants of elderly people with normal cognitive function. Results Based on assessment of twenty scents, only twelve scents were recognisable. Additionally, coffee, lemongrass, oranges, eucalyptus, and menthol were the ones with most correct answers without assistance. Besides, there were four additional scents that were answered correctly the most, with or without assistance, namely jasmine, lemon, aromatic ginger, and lime. Discussion Selection of the standardized scents in olfactory assessment should consider familiarity of the smells that are relevant to the background of the patients. Moreover, five types of scents, specifically fruity, woody, floral, citrus, and spicy are more identifiable among elderly populations. Furthermore, smell recognition is more related to emotional memories of personal experiences, rather than generally applicable semantic memory, hence most recognized types of scents that are considered as standardized were mainly the ones that are more commonly found among the population. Conclusion This study found that only nine scents that has been standardized, as well as familiar and potential to be utilized in the future assessment of the olfactory function.
