Abstract
Effervescent is a convenient dosage forms that can be consumed easily and practically by the patient, especially for those who may have difficulty in swallowing and also ease to be carrying compared with solution dosage forms. The effervescent granules were easier to absorb compared to the tablet because it is completely dissolved in water and can provide a refreshing taste. The effervescent tablet was one of an option for drug delivery including herbal medicine. Citronella grass (Cymbopogon nardus (L.) Rendle) showed antibacterial and antifungal activity due to content of essential oils, saponins, flavonoids, and tannins. This research aims to design the formulate effervescent tablet of citronella grass ethanol extract to obtain the appropriate disintegration time and good flow properties as a mouthwash.
The researcher formulates citronella grass ethanol extract effervescent using PVP 0.24% as binder, citric acid 19.23%, tartaric acid 14.43% and sodium bicarbonate 28.85% as acid and base agent. Evaluation results show disintegration time for less than 2 minutes, 1.59% for LOD and flow freely granules. Reduction in binder concentration did not impact the disintegration time and lower the quality of granules. The addition in the concentration of citric acid, tartaric acid, and sodium bicarbonate is increasing the flowability of granules and disintegration time while combining granulation process gives the opposite results. Decreasing the particle size of citric acid reduces flowability of granules.
We conclude that this result was one promising formula for delivering citronella grass extract as antibacterial agent through effervescent tablet as mouthwash dosage forms.
