This study aimed to evaluate students' pronunciation skills of word sounds and stress using the Duolingo application. The participants of this study were 29 five-grade students from IPEKA Grand Wisata Christian School, Grand Wisata, South Tambun, West Java, Indonesia. The instruments of this research were the test items of the pretest and the post-test, which employed reading texts consisting of 10 target words with one to three syllables and containing the [æ] [?] sounds, then analyze the scores using the SPSS program. Between the pre-test and the post-test, the treatments were conducted three times. The students were exposed to the Duolingo application during the treatments through the activities in the classroom provided. Eventually, the results of this study show that utilizing the Duolingo application in the class activities effectively improves the students’ pronunciation in terms of their accuracy in vowel sounds and putting the correct word stress for Elementary EFL. Moreover, the improvement of their pronunciation is statistically significant. Furthermore, the study concluded that Duolingo is a vital tool in learning for elementary EFL learners based on its use in the classroom. The suggestions offered from this study were that the English teachers, and lecturers could apply this mobile learning application of Duolingo in teaching pronunciation skills such as word stress and word sound in the classroom instructions in order to improve students' pronunciation skills. |
