Concerning the advantages and difficulties students experienced when learning speaking during the Covid-19 pandemic situation, this study investigated four research questions related to the activities students did to learn English speaking. The research questions were (1)what did senior high school students do to learn speaking in class and outside the class during the online learning period? (2)what were the problems encountered by the senior high school students in learning speaking and how did they solve the problems during the online period? (3)what were the senior high school students’ suggestions to learn English speaking within online learning period?, and (4)what were the strategies used by the students to learn speaking during the online learning period? This study was a quantitative and qualitative study that involved grade 11 students and two English teachers of a senior high school in Jakarta. The research was conducted through questionnaire and interviews at the school. The questionnaire was filled out by 88 students and the interviews were participated by 14 students, and two teachers. This study found that teacher is needed by students to practice speaking, but when teacher is not available students are still able to learn speaking. The analysis of the study revealed that during the online learning period students learned English speaking in class and outside the class by (1)looking for information source in English, (2)watching English videos on YouTube, (3)attending native English teacher class, (4)doing exercise in English lab session, (5)watching TikTok in English, (6)joining MUN class, (7)talking with friends online, (8)listening to English songs, (9)communicating with friends, teacher, and family members, (10)reading English books, novels, (11)participating in English Day, reading the daily devotion and prayer, (12)doing grammar exercises, and (13)doing assignments. The study also found challenges encountered by the students, i.e. (1)lack of confidence, (2)lack of pronunciation skill, (3)lack of partner to speak English with, and (4)lack of natural English speaking. The fact that students need to practice English more effectively, having a whole session devoted to speaking practice can be a good idea. In this research, it was also found that English Day program, watching YouTube and TikTok, joining English competitions, talking with online friends, and displaying students’ assignments can make students practice speaking more effectively. The results of this study might be useful for those who need to learn English speaking but cannot learn it from the teacher. |
