This study aims to investigate the perceptions of pre-service teachers at the English Language Education Department of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia towards their own digital competencies and how competent they are in implementing their digital competencies in their education and online teaching performance. When it comes to the utilization of information and communication technology (ICT), the pre-service teachers are expected to have a high level of adequate digital competencies. In this study, digital competencies are referred to five dimensional skills which are information and data literacy, communication and collaboration, digital content creation, safety, and problem solving. Fifty-five (55) pre-service teachers who were still enrolling on some particular courses involving ICT use and required to conduct online teaching to some degree, participated in this research by responding to the teachers’ digital competence- based framework questionnaire and doing an interview session to examine their own digital competencies on utilizing ICT in online learning. The results of the study showed that all of pre-service teachers regarded highly all five-dimensional skills of digital competencies in facilitating their online teaching through the use of ICT, covering technical and substantial functions, making their online teaching to be displayed accordingly. Nevertheless, in the orientation of promoting constructive strategies in supporting preservice teachers’ digital competencies development, further studies on the curriculum-based ICT-integrated program planning at the institution level are proposed to be conducted to bring an extended overview in evaluating pre-service teachers’ digital competencies implementation. |
