Abstract
This study aims to investigate the effects of salt water immersion on the water absorption behavior and mechanical properties (tensile strength, compressive strength and impact strength) of gunny fibers - reinforced polyester composites. The composite was made using woven bi-directional gunny fiber and unsaturated polyester resin with vacuum bag moulding method. Maximum moisture content values of gunny fiber composites immersed in 3.5% NaCl solution at room temperature were found to be lower than those immersed in 60 ?C. The water absorption and the temperature of immersion are affecting the mechanical properties of gunny fiber composite. The highest impact strength was achieved by speciments immersed in 60 °C saltwater followed by unimmersed speciments then by speciments immersed in room temperature saltwater. The highest tensile strength was achieved by unimmersed speciments followed by speciments immersed in room temperature saltwater then followed by speciments immersed in 60 °C saltwater.
