In the face of a new normal within society due to current situation, EFL learners must adapt to an online classroom setting where multimedia such as videos, in which subtitles are utilized, are often used to present and deliver lesson materials. This study attempts to find whether subtitles on a talk show podcast segments can improve the vocabulary retention of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia’s second semester English Language Education Department students and to find out the attitude of the students towards subtitles in podcast segments. The participants of this study are eight 2021 batch students in their second semester of Atma Jaya Catholic University’s English Language Education Department. The participants were assigned into one experimental group, where they watch podcast segments in English with English subtitles. Descriptive Statistics analysis was used to present the effect of subtitled podcast segments towards students’ vocabulary retention and their attitude regarding subtitled podcast segments towards their vocabulary retention. The result of this study showed that there was an improvement towards students’ vocabulary retention after using subtitled podcast segments, and the students’ attitude towards subtitled podcast segments were generally positive. |
