Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the metaphors that appear in the film Sing(2016) along with the translation strategies found in the animated film's subtitles. This study was not requiring participants since the data were taken from the utterances spoken in the scenes and the subtitle. This research used qualitative methods to analyze metaphors based on Ullman, Stephen (1972). The analyzed data were presented in a table containing dialogue as the source language and subtitles as the target language, types of metaphors, and translation strategies. The analysis of metaphors in the film Sing showed that there are twenty-one metaphors appeared, those are six anthropomorphic metaphors, one animal metaphor, eight abstract to concrete analogies, and the last six synesthetic metaphors. Meanwhile, according to Newmark's theory, the translation strategies found in the film were four out of seven strategies. Metaphors converted into other metaphors using the same image appeared twelve times, then followed by metaphor conversion to senses with four-time-occurrence. Besides, the other two metaphors, metaphors transformed into metaphor with new images and metaphors converted into parables using the same image, were found the lowest position with three and two times occurrence. Eventually, this study is expected to benefit teachers in finding the way to introduce English metaphors to the students as well as motivate students in learning English as a foreign language.
