Isi artikelThis paper assesses food supply, demand, and trade prospects for South Asia in the context of a global food projections model. Food production growth in South Asia will be relatively strong, but with rapid population growth compared to the rest of Asia and solid income growth, food demand growth is also high, creating upward pressure on cereal imports into the region. Progress in reducing child malnutrition will be slow. South Asia would be hit hard by reduced investment in agricultural research and social services and even small shortfalls from projected income growth levels. Effective economic growth policies and sustained or increased investment in agricultural research and social sectors are essential for greater food security and reduced malnutrition in South Asia. Complacency about the food supply and demand situation at national and international levels could lead to severe regional food security problems.
