Abstract
The current research examined the use of guiding questions in improving students’ speaking skills especially storytelling. The objective of this study is to find out whether guiding can improve students’ speaking ability. This study was held by online in a virtual classroom and involved 26 12th grade students in Pius Bakti Utama Senior High School. The instruments of this research were tasks for experimental and controlled group, which both groups were tasked in presenting a storytelling via zoom meeting. Experimental group participants were given some guiding questions, and controlled group participants were not given any guiding questions. The findings of the research revealed that the use of guiding questions can improve students’ speaking skills especially storytelling. Based on the result, it show that mean score of experimental group got the higher score (80.77) than the mean score of controlled group (64.77). Thus, this indicates that the means of both groups are significantly different. Furthermore, the suggestions offered from this study were that the teacher and future researcher could apply this method in speaking skills classroom by online or offline, and look for more effective activities to use guiding questions as a teaching medium in conducting further research.
