Isi artikelBackground: Palmaris longus is a dispensable muscle with a long tendon which is very useful in reconstructive surgery. Palmaris longus is one of the most variable muscles in the body. Alhought it is of the little functional use to human upper limb, it assumes great importance when used as a donor tendon for transfer or transplant. It is well known that individuals may have unilateral or bilateral absence of palmaris longus. This study aims to determine whether each individual has a pair of palmaris longus. Methods: In 200 subjects (men and women), age between 17 and 80 years, were randomly selected by the principal author and examined. Individuals with a history of injury or abnormality of the upper extremities were excluded. The examination entailed observation of the volar aspect of the wrist, looking for the palmaris longus tendon in its usual anatomical position just ulnar to the flexor carpi radialis tendon. If the tendon was not visible, the patients was asked to oppose his or her thumb to the little finger and flex at the wrist. If all of the above failed to demonstrate a palmaris longus tendon, it was considered for both sides. Relationships between tendon absence, hand dominance and gender were analused using the descriptive data. Results: 11% shows the left absence, 3% shows the right absence and 9% bilateral absence. Of the subjects with absence of palmaris longus, 7 were male and 10 women. Of those with unilateral absence, 11 male subjects and 17 women suibjects. Conclusions: The absence of the tendon palmaris longus muscle there are many on the left side, and more incidence in women. When compared other research research in Indonesia is almost the same as in Malaysia.
