Isi artikelThe Japanese economy has endured five years of stagnation since the outset of recession in 1991. This paper examines some of the factors that have hitherto hindered economic recovery and considers some of the remedial measures employed, notably structural reform. The problem of non - performing loans in the banking industry is discussed in depth, including the evolution of the problem and the response of the authorities. Particular emphasis is placed on the financial difficulties of the jusen (housing loan companies), and the paper concludes with suggested scenarios for dealing with this issue.
