Isi artikelEven though in economic history, we cannot simply project from the past, the patterns of future evolution are best evaluated from a sophisticated understanding of where the two countries are today. We should not expect either the continuation of American generosity or Japanese subservience. For now there is, sad to say, a mean spirit in public life. Remembrances of the past injustices will feed it, sometimes in a self - destructive manner. This is demonstrated here in the current unwillingness in Japan to learn from the US experience in resolving the S & L crisis.
