Isi artikelThe impact of learning by doing and openness in trade on the pattern of input and output growth in Japan (1965 – 1990) are analyzed here in terms of a two - step model. The first step specifies the optimal steady state demand for inputs, whereas the second step specifies a path of convergence to the steady state. The estimated econometric results of the two - step model provide valuable insights into the contributions of different types of labor and the export eternality factor. There is strong empirical evidence that the Japanese producer places more emphasis on the forward looking long-run goals than the short - run goal of stability and the past trends.
