The police had cleared the streets of people--supporters and protesters alike--allowing Mr Putin's motorcade to glide eerily across the capital and through the gates of the Kremlin. Only the day before, the city had looked very different. An anti-Putin march of as many as 20,000 people turned chaotic and violent.
