Isi artikelSurveys show that traded - goods prices are higher in Japan than elsewhere. Explanations have focussed on trade policies, distributional inefficiencies, oligopolistic rent extraction, and the keiretsu. The trade policy, rent extraction, and keiretsu hypotheses all receive support from the econometric results reported in this paper.
