Abstract
Introduction: Working memory deficit can be used as a predictor of a variety problems, such as learning difficulties, as well as behavioural and emotional problems of elementary school students.
Objective: To identify working memory deficit proportion of elementary school students at SDN Pegangsaan II/07, North Jakarta.
Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive, at 96 elementary school students from I-VI grades obtained by stratified random sampling, conducted in February-August 2014 at SDN Pegangsaan II/07, North Jakarta. Working Memory Rating Scale (WMRS) instrument was used and filled by class custody of honorary or permanent teachers who have worked at least 1 month, while demographic questionnaire was filled by parents, the birth mother. Data analysis was descriptive.
Results: 44.8% of elementary school students were detected deficit in working memory, 32.6% was moderate working memory deficit and 67.4% was severe working memory deficit. Working memory deficit is most often found in elementary school students of fourth and sixth grades. The proportion of working memory deficit is more common in boys (53.7%) than girls (38.2%). Boys (41.5%) were found to have more severe working memory deficit than girls (21.8%).
Conclusion: The proportion of working memory deficits in elementary school students was quite large and this condition needs more attention to increase the quality of children.
