Isi artikelThe variability of the workstations’ output rate is an indication that an assembly line is unbalance. The unbalance assembly line will cause inefficient assembly operation because of bottle neck and operator idle. In order to solve those problems, the cellular manufacturing approach can be used. Cellular manufacturing is an application of the group technology concept where machines are grouped and allocated in the machine cells based on the similarity of the process and product processed by the machines. The primary objective of the cellular manufacturing is to minimize intercellular movement of the parts being assembled. A case study in an assembly line of an electric company situated in Indonesia was done in order to implement the concept of cellular manufacturing. The case study was intended to increase the efficiency of the assembly line, reduce the quantity of the resources required, improve the performance of the operators, decrease products queue length, and to minimize the manufacturing lead time. The result of the case study showed that the application of the cellular manufacturing not only can increase the efficiency of the assembly line but also decrease the space required for the assembly line.
