Abstract
Introduction
A corrosive substance will destroy or irreversibly damage when it comes in contact. The degree and location of corrosive injury depends on the quantity, concentration, the ingested substance, and duration of contact. Acid agents cause coagulation necrosis with eschar formation. The purpose of this study was to report several cases of concentrated hydrochloric acid ingestions in our institution during 2 years.
Case Illustrations
During period of May 2009 until January 2011, we had five young adult patients which had suicidal attempt by ingesting concentrated hydrochloric acid. Two of them were male. They came to our Emergency Department around 2-6 hours after the ingestion of agents. One case had delayed gastric perforation, but she could survived with jejunostomy tube for enteral feeding when she discharged. Another patient had delayed pyloric stenosis with malnutrition and she had underwent a gastrojejunostomy with bypass surgery. The rest of cases had esophageal strictures and gastric stenosis. Two of them had died after discharged.
Conclusion
Ingestion of concentrated hydrochloric acid has poor prognosis.
