While the differences between two languages can be clarified through contrastive research, the development of intermediate language still needs to be explored. In Taiwan, the study of intermediate language requires further investigation. This study uses conversation analysis to investigate Japanese Mandarin learners back-channels acquisition. The data was collected using audio/video recordings during face-to-face conversations with three Japanese Mandarin learners and one native mandarin speaker. It was discovered that (1) there is a correlation between the length of utterances and study history, (2) there is no correlation between the amount of the learners utterances and study history, (3) the back-channels in the B group are acquired earlier by the learners than the back-channels in the A group, (4) learners with a shorter learning history tend to use laughter as a strategy for participating in conservation to a greater extent. Further, it was found that in terms of the development of the intermediate language, CS (code switching) was observed in B group usage. This study is expected to form the foundation of a longitudinal study in the future to observe the development of conversational ability over time.
