Jorge Edwards (Cervantes Prize, 1999), a well-recognized Chilean writer, introduces us to the realm of testimonial narrative, one of the most ancient genres of literature. The genre is present in his work and within the narrative context of Chile in the 1970s. One of his books, Persona non grata, written in 1973, reflects the novelist's experience in Cuba as a diplomat serving the government of Salvador Allende (1970-1973). This book was banned by many in his own country and beyond. In several books Edwards directs his literary analysis toward on examination of 1970s Chilean society. The period described by the author in his work includes the mandate of Allende and the Popular Unity movement, as well as the military coup (1973) and the susequent dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet. From his writings we could mention for example, El sueno de la historia (1999), Adios poeta (1990), and La casa de Dostoievsky (2008), a novel that received the prestigious prize Planeta-Casa de Americas. These books are an irrefutable record of Edwards's particular vision of his exile experience, especially in the last yeas of Pinochet's dictatorship. They are together a profound description of the encounters between imagination as a "testimony" and the "recuperation of history". The present article offers a brief and concise exposition of his novel El sueno de la histora as a testimonial narrative.
