Abstract
Introduction: The ability to grip is one of the most important functions of the hand. Hand grip strength can be used to reflect overall muscular strength. Previous study showed that muscular strength is associated with cognitive function and balance disturbance in elderly people.

Aims: The aim of this study is to determine the relation between handgrip strength and cognitive function and balance of the elderly.

Methods: This cross sectional study was done in nursing homes, Jakarta, April 15 to May 30th 2014. Handgrip strength was measured using Camry electronic handgrip dynamometer model EH101-37, cognitive function was assessed by Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and Berg Balance Scale was used for assessing balance.

Results: There were 138 subjects included with mean age 71.8±7.9, mostly women (51.4%) and low education (64.5%). Mean right and left handgrip strength was 12.6±6.8kg and 11.8±6.3kg. There were 86.2% elderly with cognitive impairment and 57.2% with balance disorder There was a significant relationship between the right handgrip strength and cognitive function (p=0.04; OR=2.9), and the balance (p=0.05; OR=1.9), and between the left handgrip strength and balance (p=0.046; OR=2.0).

Discussion: The relationship between handgrip strength and cognitive function as well as balance gives us opportunity for better understanding to identify patients with early signs of declining cognition and balance.
