Abstract
Introduction: Language impairment is often the earliest sign of cognitive decline in the elderly.
Aim: This study aimed to determine the effect of vascular risk factors and APOE e4 genotype on language function in the elderly.
Methods: This was a cross-sectional study, with 108 subjects aged over 60 years and older from September to November 2014 Kalianyar urban community, West Jakarta. Vascular risk factors and the e4 allele of apolipoprotein E (APOE e4) were assessed using blood test and interview. Language function was assessed using the Boston naming test (BNT) and the verbal fluency test (VFT).
Results: There were 108 subjects with mean age 63.5+5.25 years. Most were woman (63.9%) with less than 9 years of education (77.7%). Some of them had diabetes (17.6%), systolic hypertension (52.8%), diastolic hypertension (56.5%), hypercholesterolemia (67.6%), and smoking habits (25%). More than half of the subjects had language function impairment, assessed with BNT (50.9%) and VFT (80.6%). The vascular risk factor that affect language function was only hypercholesterolemia, as assessed using BNT (p=0.047) and VFT (p=0.029)}. Education, sex, and age did not show significant effects towards language function. All subjects with positive APOE e4/4 had lower BNT scores.
Discussion: Hypercholesterolemia was related to language impairment in elderly. All subjects with positive APOE e4/4 had lower BNT scores.
