Abstract
Alzheimer disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VD) are common causes of declining cognitive function. The contribution of hypertension as vascular risk factors for the development of AD/VD have received much attention in recent years. Numerous epidemiologic studies have addressed the relationship between blood pressure (BP), cognitive function, and dementia. Hypertension occurring in mid-life is a risk factor of dementia occurring in later age. Long-standing and variability of high Blood pressure will induce structural damages in the brain. Regardless of the underlying etiologies, controlling BP might prevent dementia or slow the progression of cognitive decline. Optimum systol blood pressure should be targeted to 120-130 mm Hg, especially in nondiabetic hypertensive patients with significant risk factors. Advantages of aggressive treatment to levels < 120 mm Hg are still unclear to prevent dementia.
