Abstract
It may still be years until an effective medication available for prevention of alzheimer disease (AD). Non pharmacologic strategies (Physical and social activity, mental/ cognitive stimulation, diet and nutrition) surely are promising interventions with strong epidemiologic studies and several RCTs showing positive results. Epidemiologic studies of modifiable risk factors can help facilitate the transtition from observational data for an effective prevention. Based on these epidemiologic studies, vascular risk factors in midlife group have been consistently associated with increasing risk of late life dementia. However, the association of dementia with similar vascular risk factors in older age group remains unclear. Hence, the knowledge of prolonged prodromal phase in dementia and understanding the effects across the life span can perhaps be the foundation to focus on the timing and duration of prevention targets.
