Abstract
Writing is often considered the most challenging skill to master compared to other skills, such as reading, listening, and speaking. Getting feedback or inputs from trusted sources, such as teachers or even technology, such as Grammarly is certainly one way to develop students’ writing skills. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate students’ attitudes toward teacher’s corrective feedback and automated feedback program Grammarly in EFL writing and to figure out the strengths and weaknesses of both feedback as well. The participants of this study were 21 first-semester students of the English Language Education Department of Atma Jaya Catholic University who were taking Reading and Writing Fundamental classes. The research method used in this study was quantitative and qualitative since the data is in numerical form (numbers) from the questionnaire and written responses from the open-ended questionnaire and interviews. Besides, the data were analyzed using qualitative analysis based on the results of questionnaires and interviews obtained to find out students’ attitudes towards teachers’ corrective feedback and Grammarly, as well as the strengths and weaknesses. Furthermore, this study and analysis results revealed that, generally, students had a positive attitude toward teacher’s corrective feedback and Grammarly’s feedback since most of the statements of each attitude component researched (affective, cognitive, and behavior) showed the mean of 3.5 and above, which indicated a positive attitude as proposed by Sugiyono (2013). This study’s results also showed student responses that stated that teacher’s corrective feedback effectively develops students’ writing skills in terms of the content and organization of writing as it is considered more detailed and precise. On the other hand, Grammarly’s feedback is considered efficient in terms of time and relatively useful in reducing writing errors, such as grammar, spelling, punctuation, diction, and capitalization, which in the end can also assist students to develop their writing skills independently.
