We will see that this feedback relationship can entail systematic oscillatory behaviour, in which periods of substantial innovative activity are interspersed with slowdowns in the innovation process. A formal illustrative model, demonstrating that such an oscillatory time path can indeed emerge, and indicating how it can occur, also proves that chaotic behaviour can, at least in theory, emerge.
