Isi artikelHealthcare industry has significantly changed in recent years. Many changes are radical; such as, awareness of patient’s right, universal medical service available to all and easy access of medical information from Internet. The healthcare institutions not only face the pressure of adopting of expensive emerging medical technologies but also improving quality, efficiency, patient safety and service. Through the case of Virginia Mason Medical Center and the National Taiwan University Hospital’s lean initiative, Lean principles applied in healthcare industry offer high hopes. In this article, on one hand literature are reviewed on how “Lean Thinking” helps healthcare industry cut waste and add customer value; on the other hand a conceptual framework of “Lean Healthcare” in three dimensions (purpose, process and people) was developed for a specific application of “Lean Thinking” in healthcare environment.
