The meaning and management of quality has evolved and assumed a variety of approaches, responding to an increased variety of needs. In industry, quality and its control has responded to the need of maintaining an industrial process operating as ‘expected’, reducing the process sensitivity to uncontrolled disturbances (robustness) etc. Processes in production are focused on effectiveness and efficiency, optimisation, cycle times and yield rates. As an outcome of these processes ‘product quality’ has been defined as ‘fitness for purpose’. By the same token, in services, quality has been defined as ‘satisfied customers obtaining the services they expect’. Production and Quality management, like Risk management, has a general down-side connotation, arising from the consequential effects of ‘non-quality and non-conformity in systems, processes and products’. For example. Quality meeting design, product liability and ISO requirements. Production meeting Workplace health and safety standards and HR requirements. Risk management covering governance, adherence to rules and regulations and emergency preparedness. A common linkage here is the concept of ‘Protecting Value’. On the other hand, if the concept of ‘Pursuing Value’ is examined we can see a picture of innovation, exceeding customer expectations, experimentation & discovery, lean thinking and practice, changing traditional ways of doing things and adopting new paradigms. Quality, just as risk, is measured as a consequence resulting from factors and events defined in terms of the statistical characteristics that underlie these events. Productivity, Quality and Risk may thus converge, both conceptually and technically, expanding the concerns that these domains are confronted with and challenged by.
