Cardiovascular disease which often starts from hypertension is the highest caused of mortality in Indonesia. Hypertension prevalence in Indonesia is estimated 17-21% of the population. It tends to increase because of lifestyle changes, one of them is smoking. There are two aims of this study: 1) to describe the proportion of hypertension and smoking habit among patients at Layanan Kesehatan Cuma-Cuma (LKC), Ciputat, and 2) to know the relationship between smoking habits including the number of cigarettes, duration of smoking, and type of cigarettes, and hypertension at LKC Ciputat. This is a cross sectional study. The data was obtained using a questionnaire, medical record and measurement of blood pressure. Population of this study are all adult patients who came to LKC Ciputat during December 2119-February 2010. The data were taken from 77 patients using consecutive sampling technique" There were 31 patients with hypertension. The result of Chi-square test showed that there is a correlation between 1). the number of cigarettes and hypertension (p = 0.034), and 2). the type of cigarettes and hypertension (p = 0.011). However, there was no correlation between duration of smoking and hypertension (p = 0.191). As smoking habits increase the risk of hypertension, health promotion about the risk of hypertension in the patient who has a smoking habit should be done in order to reduce the incidence of hypertension.
