Abstract
Translation is a process of transferring the message from SL to TL and there must be an equivalence element in the translation process itself. This study was aimed to investigate the causative verbs from English into Indonesian taken from the English-written novel entitled The Cuckoo’s Calling and its Indonesian translation in Dekut Burung Kukuk. The research questions were formulated into what causative verbs were found in the original novel, what the most used CV was found in that novel, and how the most used CV was translated into Indonesian novel to see its meanings and syntactic aspects. In order to answer the research questions, the data taken from those two novels were analyzed. These research findings revealed that the five causative verbs such as let, get, make, help, and have proposed by Azar (2002) and Fuchs & Bonner (2001) appeared in The Cuckoo’s Calling novel and it was found that the most employed causative verb in the novel was ‘let’ that was translated into meminjamkan, membiarkan, dibiarkan, beri tahu, biarkan, biar, izinkan, sebentar, kelepasan bicara, and two others that were not translated into the TL. This study also shows that there were some changes in (1) English parts of speech (2) English causative constructions, (3) passivization, and (4) types of sentences when they were translated into Indonesian. The result of this study can give insights to translators, instructors of teaching Indonesian as a foreign language, and English teachers, so that they can optimize their understanding in causative verbs.
