| The purpose of this study is to see the development of students' speaking fluency in speaking courses by looking at three aspects of fluency, namely speech rate, phonation-time ratio, and mean length of runs. The participants are active students of English Language Education at the Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia who have passed all speaking courses. The research data were taken from the video recordings of students' speech in the first semester which then compared to the speeches that were recorded in the fifth semester. The students’ videos were transcribed and analyzed to identify the improvement in speech rate (the number of words spoken per minute), phonation-time ratio (the time spent to speak not including the pauses), and mean length of runs (the total number of syllables produced in each utterance between pauses). It can be concluded that despite having slower than average speech rate, the participants experienced an increase in speaking fluency after studying for five semesters in the English Language Education Department study program at Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia. When compared to the speeches that the participants recorded in the first semester, in the new recording, the participants produced more words, the pauses were reduced, and also the participants could utter longer sentence in between pauses. For further research, the number of participants and samples can be added so that the data can be calculated statistically to see the significance of the improvement. |
