The influence of prompting on free recall of a text was studied by presentation of retrieval cues. In the first experiment the presentation of retrieval cues with respect to half of the constituent paragraphs of an expository text did not appear to influence the total number of recalled paragraphs. However, an output bias in favor of the prompted paragraphs was observed. When retrieval cues were presented with respect to all paragraphs, their effectiveness appeared to be a function of the sequential position in which the subjects tried to use them. The results are discussed in terms of output interference. The results of the second experiment showed that the presentation of retrieval cues and verbal embellishment of the contents of a text appear to affect the probability of recall of the constituent paragraphs cumulatively.
