Isi artikel
Solving anagrams has been conceptualized as a two-stage process, involving letter rearrangement and then the matching of the rearrangement with a word accessed from memory. However, findings of facilitation when solution words were cued by related words suggest that the cue might have been used to access potential solution words prior to letter rearrangement. Unlike previous research, which used cues that always were accurate, the present research used a task similar to lexical decision, except that subjects were timed in determining whether letter strings were anagrams. In Experiments 1 and 2, letter strings were primed by words that were or were not related to the anagram's solution. Experiment 3, which used category labels as primes, varied both prime-target relatedness and whether or not the prime accurately predicted solutions that were instances of specified categories. Priming-effect patterns suggested that semantic information can control processing so that lexical access guides letter rearrangement.
