Isi artikel
Accuracy of identification of single letters presented in the near periphery (2.20, 3.30, or 4.40) was adversely affected when subjects were given a simultaneous foveal visual task as part of the same display. The level of processing required by the foveal task as well as the attentional allocation instructions were both found to be important. Tunnel vision as opposed to general interference can be induced by a combination of high foveal cognitive load, a focused attention strategy, and speed stress. The functional field of view has been described by Mackworth (1965) as: The area around the fixation point from which information is being briefly stored and read out during a visual task. When there is too much information, the useful field contracts to prevent overloading of the visual system. The useful field of view is therefore varying in width from moment to moment according to the amount of information in the display. (p. 67)
