Isi artikelThis experiment investigated whether similarity in the way two events are learned would increase levels of retroactive inhibition (RI). Learning was manipulated by requiring subjects to use either the same or a different orienting task for two lists, with learning being incidental. The results show that levels of RI are affected by a change in the orienting task. It is suggested that the internal learning environment may be influenced by the type of orienting tasks used but that biases in the subject's processing can occur despite the orienting task being performed. Certain methodological questions about using an incidental, free-recall paradigm for studying RI are discussed
