Isi artikel
Three experiments examined the influence of ordinal position in the alphabet on verbal reaction times for naming presented or preceding letters of the alphabet. Position in the alphabet had little influence on the speed of letter identification or articulation. Significant increases in reaction times to later alphabetic positions were observed in all cases that required subjects to access memory for alphabetic order. Results are interpreted as supporting the view that storage of alphabetic information in human memory involves formation of chunks of characters which progressively increase in size with alphabetic position.
